Welcome to Omaha, NE! Wait, don't go! Omaha is actually a nice and interesting place. Did you know they have one of the best zoos in the country? Do you like trains? Do you need a place to sleep while driving across the midwest? Visiting Nebraska was stop number 40 on my way to visiting all 50 United States, and Omaha was the home of my great grandparents so it was well worth a stop.
The Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha is a great zoo. I would place it in the same level as the San Diego Zoo and Lincoln Park Zoo as one of the top places in the country. They have indoor and outdoor exhibits and a cool live steam train running throughout the park. Even the prairie dogs love the place! On site is a large geodesic dome housing a desert exhibit. The indoor jungle is the only place I know of where you can actually get more humid in the Midwest. Even the slightly more evolved humans love the primates enjoying the cardboard boxes more than the contents.
The Durham Museum in Omaha is located in the old Union Station near downtown. The station was donated to the city by Union Pacific and restored to its full glory. It now houses a collection of railroad memorabilia and historical Omaha and Nebraska exhibits. Tuesday nights have extended hours, although the service men above are on duty 24/7.
Omaha is a good, honest place in a rather hilly part of Nebraska. Sure, it is mainly about trains and corn these days. We should always remember that time marches on, and even the glory cities of the present can quickly lose their steam. Fortunately, Omaha is working hard to recover their glory and forge ahead. Please enjoy the rest of my pictures below.
